Program Description

The Academy at Sisters was established in 1994 as a small, emotional growth boarding school for young women.  The Academy focuses on transforming crisis and chaos into commitment and change.  They do this by employing a “back to basics” approach, which emphasizes personal responsibility and accountability.  The Personal Growth Program at The Academy requires residents to think about how they think, examine their values and take a responsible approach to living, learning and interacting with others.  The Personal Growth Program addresses a wide variety of problems and behaviors, and may include those of young women who are beyond parental control, chronically truant from school, and possess poor refusal skills or other peer group issues.  This program also deals with academic underachieving, drug and alcohol involvement as well as crisis-bound family relationships.  The Academy has an academic program with a college preparatory curriculum.  The Academy at Sisters Learning Center is dedicated to the mission of providing an environment that promotes integrity and develops critical thinking in an atmosphere of positive relationships and mutual respect.

Big Brothers Big Sisters was established in Central Oregon in 1994.  Since 1904, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been helping improve the lives and futures of children throughout the nation.  Youth served are in need of quality adult attention and a friend and companion who can help them improve their self esteem and confidence, and learn about the world through new eyes.  Big Brothers Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentoring program provided to children and their families.  It is based on the belief that support and guidance from non-related adults can break through the isolation often present in the lives of “at-risk” children.

Program Description

The J Bar J Boys Ranch covers approximately 40 acres and includes three residence halls, school, administrative complex, maintenance facility and barn on beautifully landscaped grounds.  It affords an unobstructed view of the Cascade Mountains twenty miles to the west.  J Bar J specializes in work with youth who have a chronic criminal history in the community and at home.  This program offers an alternative to placement at state institutional facilities.  The program stresses individual accountability and personal growth.  Youthful offenders are helped to understand the origins of their irresponsible behavior, and are provided with the mechanisms for them to learn to “view the world rationally” and permanently discontinue their hurtful behaviors.  The highly structured environment balances both social and academic performance.  An accredited on-campus school is offered, the goal of which is the success of each resident in the public school system.  Treatment duration averages nine to 12-18 months.
