Why it Matters

We began producing the Leadership Series for mid-level managers, supervisors, CEOs and board members. The tri-focus of the Leadership Series is to:

  • Address the expected exit of CEO’s in the next five years.
  • Build leadership inside organizations.
  • Achieve diversity and culturally-informed leadership.

It is the goal of the Leadership Series to build leaders through best practices by affordable, one-day quarterly trainings for aspiring leaders.

In 2010, the Alliance membership requested that their Annual Summit focus on building culturally-informed organizations.

In 2011, Concordia University and Trillium Family Services partnered to convene a statewide, three-day immersion in a facilitated scenario planning for Oregon in 2025.

“How can we better prepare ourselves to serve Oregon’s most vulnerable families over the next 15 years?” was the key question considered in the gathering of 37 leaders from Oregon’s business, nonprofit (including the Alliance), education, judicial and human service sectors.

The result of the scenario planning:

Organizations need innovation as their drivers; and they need to invest in leadership development to sustain their organizations and to adapt to changing environments.

In 2012, the Alliance brought The Bridgespan Group, a national nonprofit dedicated to research and support of other nonprofits, to a three-day summit focusing on succession planning and leadership development.

They recognized that human service organizations were missing two critical opportunities:

To build leadership as part of ongoing succession planning; and to build diverse, culturally-informed leadership.

In response to these priorities, the Alliance created the Leadership Series in October 2012.
